Packaging for traditional Indian Channapatna toys

Iduadu, a packaging project for traditional Indian Channapatna toys, was a classroom project completed in collaboration with my classmate and product designer, Arwa Merchant. Product package is the most important element for Product information and visual impact of the product to the user. The aim of the project was to understand and learn the nuances of developing package design and  apply ergonomic principles, information structuring, structures and norms and safety norms to develop and efficient and user friendly package design.

Channapatna toys

These are a particular form of wooden toys (and dolls) that are manufactured in the town of Channapatna in the Bangalore rural district of Karnataka, India. They are handcrafted out of ivory-wood, rosewood or sandalwood and colored using vegetable dyes. The Channapatna toy-making industry is one where traditional art smoothly blends with contemporary art and design while providing sustainable livelihood to the the craftsmen. The lacquereware artisans use ivorywood of a special tree grown in the old Mysore region of Karnataka for making toys and dolls. These are also exported worldwide. With the advent of plastic toys in India, the demand for traditional Indian toys has reduced considerably. But it's status of being a souvenir still persists. Taking advantage of it's popularity among the foreign masses, we decided to design a packaging for these products in order for them to be exported and sold overseas. Currently, no packaging exists for this product.
